Quin, Candice

Profile Candice QuinResearch Topic: Fish Oil Supplementation to Maternal Diets Rich in Unsaturated Fats Increase Offspring Susceptibility to Infectious Colitis

Research Location: UBC Okanagan campus

Research Supervisor: Dr. Deanna Gibson

Research Description:

Clinical evidence is conflicting on the beneficial outcomes of fish oil supplementation during pregnancy and its effects on offspring physiology. It is unknown how fish oil supplementation impacts the offspring’s gut microbiome and immunity. Considering that diet influences microbiota and that maternal microbiota is passed from mother to infant, we hypothesize that maternal fish oil supplementation will affect their offspring’s gut microbiota and immunity. To approach this, I will investigate gut microbial communities and immune responses during infectious colitis in the offspring of dams fed various lipid diets supplemented with fish oil. This research could result in strategies to manage immune susceptibility by regulating maternal dietary intake during gestation and breast-feeding.

Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?

Research is always something I have been interested in because it allows for the practical application of the knowledge and skills I have acquired. Furthermore, it will advance me towards my career goals.

Why did you decide to study at UBC's Okanagan campus?

I did my undergraduate degree at UBC Okanagan because it is a well respected, highly ranked University. I had a very good experience as an undergraduate student and was introduced to Dr. Gibson's research during this time. Her research intrigued me and I was fortunate to have her accept me as a graduate student.

What impact do you hope your research will have?

This research could have immediate translational impact on maternal and child health with direct knowledge translation to pediatric caregivers in regards to fish oil supplementation.

What has been your most memorable Okanagan experience so far?

The Okanagan is a beautiful region. My most memorable experiences are from camping and hiking around the area.
