SSHRC Graduate Scholarship

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) provides financial support to outstanding eligible students pursuing master’s or doctoral studies in a Canadian university in social sciences or humanities.

Annual Value: $17,500 to $35,000 (depending on degree level)

Eligibility:

Complete eligibility criteria are available on the SSHRC website. 

Potential applicants should be sure that they are submitting their application to the most appropriate of the three federal funding agencies (CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC). If applicants are unsure whether they should submit their application to CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC, they should send a half-page summary of their intended research proposal to one of the agencies and ask the agency to confirm in writing (including by e-mail) if they are eligible to apply to that agency. Applicants are advised to err on the side of caution, and ask the funding agency for an assessment rather than guess or assume incorrectly.

Application Procedures:

SSHRC Doctoral Awards
Depending on their status at the time of application, applicants submit their application materials through a Canadian university or directly to SSHRC. Applicants must review the application process for the appropriate funding program on the SSHRC website to determine where they are to submit their application materials. Please note that if application materials are submitted to the wrong institution, the application will be withdrawn from the competition. 

Applicants who are to submit their application to the UBC Okanagan campus must submit a complete ('verified' and signed application form) application package to the College of Graduate Studies by the internal deadline:  Monday, September 18, 2017 (4:00 PM PST)

Note about transcripts: applicants who submit their application via the Okanagan campus must submit official transcripts for all post-secondary studies up until the fall session of the competition year, with their application. Transcripts must be submitted to the College of Graduate Studies in original, sealed envelopes. The College of Graduate Studies may have extra copies of official transcripts on file from previous applications, which may be utilized for the SSHRC application. Questions regarding transcripts should be directed to graduateawards.ok@ubc.ca.   

The SSHRC Letters of Appraisal forms can be found in the Forms section of the SSHRC website. The SSHRC Departmental Appraisal forms are not required by the internal deadline. 

SSHRC CGSM Awards
The Tri-Council master's programs (CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC) have harmonized the application process. Competition details are accessible via the NSERC website. Applicants are to submit the application through the online Research Portal. The deadline for applications is December 1, 2017.

It is imperative applicants consult the instructions regarding how to submit the application and the materials required. Official UBC transcripts that reflect current registration will be required. Questions regarding transcripts can be directed to: graduateawards.ok@ubc.ca.

Applicants must identify their Proposed Host Organization. All current students enrolled in a graduate program at the Okanagan campus must select The University of British Columbia as their host organization. Within this framework, the Vancouver and Okanagan campuses are considered one institution. For this reason, applicants will need to identify the Okanagan campus in either the free-form Faculty field or in the drop-down menu of the Department/Division field. Detailed instructions are available by selecting this link. Applicants that are not currently enrolled in a graduate program, may selected up to five universities as their Proposed Host Organization

Nomination Procedures:

SSHRC Doctoral Awards
The College of Graduate Studies will disseminate applications received to graduate programs. Graduate programs will review and score the award applications for students in their program and submit scoring summaries to the College of Graduate Studies. The College of Graduate Studies Scholarship and Awards Committee will convene and determine the top-ranked applications that will be submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (G+PS) for further adjudication. Nominations must be submitted by the College of Graduate Studies to G+PS by: Friday, October 13, 2017 (4:00 pm PST)

SSHRC Departmental Appraisal forms will be completed by graduate programs for only those applicants that are selected to move forward to G+PS for further adjudication. Students are not required to submit the SSHRC Departmental Appraisal forms by the internal deadline. SSHRC Departmental Appraisal forms can be found on the SSHRC website.

The quota (the maximum number of nominations that the College of Graduate Studies may submit to the G+PS) for the Tri-Council doctoral competition is: TBD (SSHRC applications only).

SSHRC CGSM Awards
The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (G+PS) will provide electronic copies of CGSM applications submitted by current and prospective students of the Okanagan campus to the College of Graduate Studies shortly after the national deadline.

The College of Graduate Studies will disseminate the applications received to graduate programs. Graduate programs will review and score the CGSM applications for students in their program and submit scoring summaries to the College of Graduate Studies. The College of Graduate Studies Scholarship and Awards Committee will convene and determine the top-ranked applications that will be submitted to G+PS for further adjudication. Nominations must be submitted by the College of Graduate Studies to G+PS by: TBD

Adjudication Procedures:

SSHRC Doctoral Awards
The College of Graduate Studies forwards its top-ranked applications to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (G+PS), which oversees a university-wide adjudication of all nominated applications. Adjudication committees composed of UBC faculty members review and rank nominated applications and select which applications will be forwarded to the national competition. UBC's nominees are forwarded to SSHRC, which oversees a nation-wide competition that selects which SSHRC Doctoral applications will be funded. Successful applicants are notified by SSHRC in the spring.

SSHRC CGSM Awards 
The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (G+PS) oversees a university-wide adjudication of all nominated applicants from the CGSM competition. Adjudication committees composed of UBC faculty members will review and rank nominated applications and select which applicants will be offered NSERC CGSM awards. The first opportunity for universities to make award offers to applicants is April 1, 2018.
