Exemptions from Course Requirements

Students will be exempted from specific course requirements if the graduate program is satisfied that the student has acquired the knowledge from courses previously taken or from experience. Exemptions do not reduce the total credits required for a degree. In such cases, the program should substitute a more appropriate course. The exemption from the specific requirement must be recorded and will show on the transcript.

Master's Students

A master’s student may be exempted from specific course requirements if the graduate program is satisfied that the student has acquired the knowledge from previous courses or experience.

Important: Exemptions do not reduce the total credits required to earn the degree. The student and program must substitute another appropriate course or courses with the same credit value.

Doctoral Students

If the doctoral program includes a prescribed amount of course work, the student may be eligible for course exemptions on the basis of previous courses taken.
