Getting the Most from the Supervisory Committee

When professors agree to sit on the student’s supervisory committee, they are agreeing to be available for consultation and discussion about the student’s thesis.  Committee members with different types of expertise may have a more objective perspective of the progress of the thesis than the student and supervisor have. To make full use of the supervisory committee, the student should:

  • Ask the committee for comments and advice on the thesis proposal and ideas.
  • Contact the committee regularly when the student is collecting data or developing ideas to ensure that s/he is on the right track.
  • Get feedback from individual committee members by sending out print materials.
  • Call for a meeting of the entire committee at the discretion and consultation of his/her supervisor.
