Description

Quick Facts

The British Columbia Graduate Scholarship (BCGS) is available to exceptional students entering a research-based graduate program on the UBC Okanagan campus.

Value: $17,500

Eligibility

  • Admission GPA of first class standing
  • Canadian citizens or permanent residents
  • Incoming full-time research-based master’s and PhD students

EVALUATION CRITERIA

  • Faculties provide recommendations to the College of Graduate Studies

Application Procedures

  • All applicants who have submitted a complete admission application by the date indicated for each admission period will be considered for this scholarship. No additional application is required
  • Students are not able to update or make changes to their admission application for the purpose of this scholarship
  • The College of Graduate Studies will pull a list of all self-identified, qualified Indigenous applicants to be considered for the annual award reserved for Indigenous applicants; such applicants will concomitantly be considered in the faculty allocation pools

Nomination Procedures

  • The College of Graduate Studies strongly recommends that faculties use the BCGS for effective recruitment of excellent students
  • Priority will be given to students who have completed their applications by January 31
  • Faculties will review and evaluate each incoming admission application that has been submitted by the deadline date
  • The responsible designate from each faculty will inform the College of Graduate Studies which students have been nominated to receive a BCGS, based on the number of BCGS awards allocated to their faculty. Faculties should nominate their quota plus one, in order to cover all potential Indigenous applicants
  • The College of Graduate Studies will confirm that nominees meet all eligibility criteria
  • Only successful nominees will be notified
SUBMITTING RECOMMENDATIONS TO COGS

Faculties are to email the name(s) of the recommended student(s) to graduateawards.ok@ubc.ca.

Conditions for AWARD holders

Satisfactory Progress

  • Award holders must maintain satisfactory progress in their program of study and remain registered as full-time students for each term of the scholarship payment
  • If the College of Graduate Studies determines that a student is making unsatisfactory progress, the College of Graduate Studies reserves the right to cancel the BCGS awarded to that student

Deferrals

  • Students receiving an award cannot defer the award to a subsequent fiscal year

Leave of Absence

  • Students granted a leave of absence or parental leave retain the full value of any university graduate fellowship or other award whose terms and conditions are established by the College of Graduate Studies. Awards will be suspended at the onset of the leave, and reinstated at the termination of the leave period, provided the student returns to full-time study within the same academic year
  • Because of its unique funding profile, the BCGS will be cancelled for students who are on leave for the duration of the 2023/2024 fiscal year

Withdrawals:

  • If an award holder withdraws from the faculty that nominated them for the scholarship, the funding received during the term for which the withdrawal is processed will be recovered by the College of Graduate Studies and returned to the nominating faculty for further allocation
