QUICK FACTS
Three prizes of $1,000 each have been made available annually by the University of British Columbia Okanagan for students whose doctoral dissertations are of exceptional quality and originality, and make a significant contribution to their academic field. One prize will be offered in each of the following three areas: 1. fine arts, humanities, and social sciences; 2. natural sciences and engineering; and 3. health sciences. These prizes are awarded on the recommendation of the College of Graduate Studies and recipients will be chosen from amongst those nominated to the CAGS/Proquest Distinguished Dissertation Awards competition.

Eligibility
- A dissertation in any discipline in natural sciences, engineering, health sciences completed and accepted by the College of Graduate Studies between 1 January 2024 and 31 December 2024.
- A dissertation in any discipline in the fine arts, humanities, and social sciences completed and accepted by the College of Graduate Studies between 1 January 2024 and 31 December 2024.
Two top rated candidates in Category 1 will be selected to receive the Dissertation Prize – one in health sciences and one in natural sciences and engineering.
One top rated candidate will be selected to receive the Dissertation Prize in Category 2 for fine arts, social sciences and humanities.
Academic Standing
- Each year, students’ progress is evaluated as either satisfactory, requiring improvement, or unsatisfactory through an Annual Progress Report. Students with unsatisfactory progress become ineligible for award funding. Students will regain eligibility when improvement required or satisfactory status is reported in the required six month interim progress report or a subsequent annual progress report.
Evaluation Criteria
- A doctoral dissertation that is of exceptional quality and originality, and makes a significant contribution to their academic field.
Nomination Procedures
- Winners of the UBC Okanagan Dissertation Award are chosen from applications submitted to the CAGS/Proquest Distinguished Dissertation Awards competition. To be eligible to apply for the UBC Okanagan Dissertation Award, applicants must meet the criteria for the CAGS ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Award as follows:
- Category 1 – A dissertation in any discipline in natural sciences, engineering, and health sciences completed and accepted by the College of Graduate Studies between 1 January 2024 and 31 December 2024.
- Category 2 – A dissertation in any discipline in the fine arts, humanities, and social sciences completed and accepted by the College of Graduate Studies between 1 January 2024 and 31 December 2024.
- Please visit the webpage for the CAGS ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Award for information on application procedures. Nominations and selection of successful candidates will be routed through this national competition.
- The nominees for the CAGS ProQuest competition may also receive the UBC Okanagan Dissertation Prize. Their success at the national level is not guaranteed, but it is possible to win both.
