Form Type: Records and Registration
Form For: Current Students and Faculty and Staff
Description
This form must be completed to request an extension to the time allowed for degree completion.
Further Information:
The expected completion time for a thesis-based master’s degree is two years, and the maximum time limit for completing such a program is five years.
The expected completion time for a doctoral program is four years, and the maximum time limit for completing a doctoral program is six years.
Under exceptional circumstances, extensions may be granted by the Dean of the College of Graduate Studies.
Extenuating circumstances may justify allowing students additional time to complete their degree programs. Students should discuss the possibility of extensions with their supervisor and their graduate program coordinator.
Each extension will be granted for a period of four, eight, or 12 months.
Program extension requests must be accompanied by:
- A letter from the supervisor providing a detailed rationale justifying the student’s request for extension.
- A detailed completion plan explaining the following:
i. what work remains in terms of experimentation and/or research;
ii. the number of thesis/dissertation chapters completed;
iii. expected completion dates for all outstanding chapters;
iv. completion dates specified for all uncompleted elements in i. and iii., as well as the anticipated defence date.
Please note that the supervisor will be required to upload these components during their section of the electronic workflow.
The College of Graduate Studies may request supplementary progress reports at various times during the extension period.
NOTE: Higher tuition fees are assessed for students on program extensions.
