Description

QUICK FACTS

Three prizes of $500 each have been made available annually by the University of British Columbia Okanagan for students whose master’s theses are of exceptional quality and originality, and make a significant contribution to their academic field. One prize will be offered in each of the following three areas: 1) fine arts, humanities, and social sciences; 2) natural sciences and engineering; and 3) health sciences. These prizes are awarded on the recommendation of the College of Graduate Studies.

Value: $500

Eligibility

  • A thesis in any discipline in the fine arts, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, and health sciences completed and accepted by the College of Graduate Studies between 1 January 2023 and 31 December 2023.

Academic Standing

  • Each year, students’ progress is evaluated as either satisfactory, requiring improvement, or unsatisfactory through an Annual Progress Report. Students with unsatisfactory progress become ineligible for award funding. Students will regain eligibility when improvement required or satisfactory status is reported in the required six month interim progress report or a subsequent annual progress report.

Evaluation Criteria

  • A master’s thesis that is of exceptional quality and originality, and makes a significant contribution to their academic field.

Nomination Procedures

The following materials must be submitted to the College of Graduate Studies by the deadline:

  • The UBC Okanagan Thesis Award Nomination Form, including all required attachments, completed by the students primary supervisor. A complete nomination package must include:
    • a letter from the student’s supervisor describing the reasons for the nomination, and an explanation of why the thesis constitutes a significant piece of original work.
    • an abstract of the thesis not exceeding 350 words, written by the student in non-technical language.
    • an up-to-date c.v. of the nominee.

Deferrals

  • Students receiving an award cannot defer the award to a subsequent fiscal year
